Yearly Blood Testing The Coggins test detects the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a deadly disease that is spread through insect bites. Because there are positive cases of EIA every year in Minnesota, we believe every horse should be tested annually. Horses that contract the disease are required by federal law to be euthanized or placed in life long quarantine away from other horses.
